The 4 Stages of the Dreadlock Maturing Process
Starting your dreadlock journey is exciting, but one thing every newbie learns fast is that dreads don’t happen overnight. They go through a natural maturing process — each stage looking and feeling totally different. Understanding these stages helps you enjoy the journey (and worry a lot less about the messy middle parts!).
Here’s a simple breakdown of the four main stages of dreadlock development:
1. The Baby Stage (0–3 Months)
This is when your dreads are fresh, brand new, and still figuring themselves out.
What to expect:
Hair feels soft and loose
Frizz everywhere (totally normal!)
Some sections may puff up or look uneven
Locks may shrink as they settle
Tips:
Be gentle with them
Avoid over-washing
Stick to residue-free products
Don’t compare — everyone’s baby stage looks different
2. The Budding Stage (3–9 Months)
This is when the magic really starts happening. Your hair begins forming small knots inside the sections — this is called “budding.”
What to expect:
Tight, hard little knots forming at random spots
Even more frizz (yep!)
Some dreads thicken, others thin out
Tips may open up or loop
Tips:
Trust the process — loops and bumps are a GOOD sign
Keep up with gentle palm rolling if that’s part of your method
Roots may need occasional tidy-ups depending on your style
3. The Teenage Stage (9–18 Months)
This is the wild phase. Your dreads are locking, but they haven’t finished maturing yet — so they can look a bit rebellious.
What to expect:
Lots of lumps, loops, and zig-zags
Dreads start feeling firmer
They might shrink more before lengthening
Some days they’ll look amazing… some days not so much
Tips:
Keep sleeping with a silk or satin bonnet/pillowcase
Maintain roots as needed
Let them be a little wild — this stage is part of their charm
4. The Mature Stage (18–24+ Months)
Finally! Your dreadlocks have fully settled into their long-term shape.
What to expect:
Dreads are firm and cylinder-shaped
Less frizz
Length begins to show again
They’re strong, tight, and consistent from root to tip
Tips:
Continue regular washing and maintenance
Moisturise your scalp when needed
Enjoy this phase — you’ve earned it!
Final Thoughts
Dreadlocks are a journey, not a destination. Every stage has its own personality, and there’s no “right” way for your locks to look along the way. Be patient, be gentle, and trust the process — your dreads are maturing exactly the way they’re meant to.
